I’m sick of how money can buy media and whole governments. The story is quite simple. The Romanian Government has just accepted a deal with Gabriel Resources, a huge corporation from Canada, to mine the biggest gold mine in Europe , which is situated near a small village , of 2500 people, in Transylvania.
Prime Minister Victor Ponta strongly opposed the project before he took power in May last year yet voted for the draft law enabling the mine, only to tell a local television station that he would vote against the project in parliament.
The company proposes carving open four quarries over the mine’s lifespan, work that would destroy four mountain tops and wipe out three outlying villages of the 16 that make up Rosia Montana municipality, while preserving the town’s historical center.
The project, which aims to use cyanide to mine 314 tonnes of gold and 1,500 tonnes of silver, has drawn fierce opposition from civic rights groups and environmentalists, who say it would destroy ancient Roman gold mines, villages and the surrounding environment while hundreds of millions of toxic waste would pour through the rivers, ultimately reaching the Danube and its fascinating ecosystem.
Yesterday thousands of people gathered in the most important cities. The protests stood their ground until late in the night.
People showed that they condemn all the political class for this decision and not only one party by shouting ” All The Parties Have Sold Our Resources ! ” ;” No Corporation Will Make Our LEgislation ! ” and other chants on this note.
All the protests where authorized and so there haven’t been registered any serious violence from the authorities.
Here are some videos from the event:
Ofcourse the protest did not get any coverage from the main-stream television because they are well payed to actually air commercials which support the Gold Corporation.
So we reach the old saying ” The Revolution Will Not Be Televised ” but it will be blogged , youtubed, twitted , etc.
Another interesting tactic of the Gold Corp. was to pay actors to play as poor villagers who are calling for jobs so they can have something to eat. Ofcourse they said everything you see is from reality but independent journalists soon found out where those actors lived and when encountered they replied in a very violent matter, thus showing what kind of people they like to hire.
So again Fuck You big corporations for taking advantage of easy to bribe governments and for ruining lives with your noobish exploatation techniques.
